Fedya and Kaffarah
Fedya (or Fidya) is a provision in Islam for individuals who are unable to fast during Ramadan due to legitimate reasons, such as old age, illness, or disability. Instead of fasting, they are required to feed a needy person for each day they miss. However, if someone is temporarily unable to fast due to circumstances like illness or travel, they should make up for the missed fasts at a later time when they are able to do so.
For Ramadan 2025, the prescribed amount for Fidyah (Fidya) is $6 for each fast missed. This amount is meant to provide two meals for one person or one meal for two individuals.
What is the difference between Fidyah (Fidya) and Kaffarah?
Both Fidyah (Fidya) and Kaffarah serve as compensations, but they are for different situations. Fidyah is given when a fast is missed for a valid reason, whereas Kaffarah is required when a fast is intentionally broken without a valid reason. Fidyah involves feeding one person, while Kaffarah requires feeding 60 people.
Kaffarah
To make up for a single intentionally broken fast, you must feed 60 people by providing at least two meals a day. A donation of AU$300 will cover two meals for 60 individuals. If this is not possible, we can offer one meal to 120 people instead.
To compensate for a broken oath, you must feed 10 people by providing them with at least two meals a day. A donation of AU$50 will provide two meals for 10 individuals. If this is not feasible, we can offer one meal to 20 people.
